SUMMARY

Adequate protection against hepatitis A, particularly amongst high-risk groups, non-immune travellers to endemic areas and in geographic regions in which the disease is endemic, is afforded through the implementation of immunisation programmes, in conjunction with the maintenance of high standards of hygiene. Avaxim® is an inactivated vaccine against the hepatitis A virus (HAV) derived from a human strain of the virus first isolated in 1977.Widely available, Avaxim confers protection against hepatitis A by inducing the production of high titres of anti-HAV antibodies rapidly following the initial injection. A booster dose, administered 6-36 months later, further amplifies the antibody response. Avaxim is highly immunogenic, irrespective of the serological status of the individual, and can be administered concomitantly with other vaccines, including those directed against typhoid and yellow fever. Avaxim is also highly effective as a booster dose in those subjects previously primed with another inactivated HAV vaccine or with the combined hepatitis A/typhoid fever vaccine,ViATIM®. Avaxim is well tolerated and associated side-effects are usually mild and transient in nature and resolve spontaneously.
