SUMMARY

Despite recent improvements in structured care and the treatment of asthma within the primary care sector, the condition remains a major burden on limited healthcare resources. Much remains to be done to address misconceptions amongst many clinicians that we have all but conquered this debilitating condition. With asthma not recognized as one of the main clinical priorities in the new NHS plan, making further improvements to its clinical management poses a significant challenge to GPs. There are also other significant barriers to its effective management, including confusion over appropriate diagnostic techniques and patient adherence to treatment. Here, practical solutions relating to improved education, diagnosis, patient communication and clinical audit are proposed to help overcome some of these barriers.
